Why should you drink Green Tea?
In Vintage Petals Tea House , we have a posted sheet with all the benefits of drinking loose green tea. Other websites will give you many reasons to drink green tea but I will only deal with the top seven. Hopefully, some of the mysticism will be cleared up.
1. Cut your cancer risk.
Green tea has a type of polyphenols that tend to impede cancer cells development. Various sources indicate that studies have found a reduction of various cancers in people who regularly drink green tea.
We have a loose green tea called Superior Gunpowder (pictured at right) that is a suggested drink by the Cross Cancer Hospital. Julie’s mother received this information on one of her visits. The flavour is rather distinctive and is enjoyed by our returning soldiers from Afghanistan. They compare it favourably to the tea they have just enjoyed.
"Our findings show that rats fed a diet containing Polyphenon E (high grade green tea polyphenol extract) are less than half as likely to develop colon cancer," Dr. Hang Xiao, from the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy at Rutgers University, Piscataway, New Jersey, noted in a statement.
2. Soothe Your Skin
Looking at the new beauty products, one gets the idea that green tea is good for your skin. Browsing through the shelves, I noticed that many skin moisturizers and anti-aging products include green tea as a promotional ingredient. I even saw a website promoting a spray of green tea as a toner.
If a loose green extract can help radiation damaged skin, it may just help with my golfer’s tan.
A German study found that an extract of green tea and hot water (filtered), applied externally to the skin for 10 minutes, three times a day could help people with skin damaged from radiation therapy (after 16–22 days).
3. Steady Your Blood Pressure
Could it be that drinking a cup of loose green tea is a relaxing activity and may slow down our busy life style? When I was teaching, I had students drink a cup of tea to settle their nerves before writing an exam. The process of inhaling the aroma, sipping slowly, and then savoring the taste were all factors in reducing stress.
Getting to the technical side, there is something called ECGC (Epigallocatechin gallate) in loose green tea. Even on a good day, I am not going to try to say those words. This is the component that causes all the good things to happen. Checking websites, I also found out that you should not overheat loose green tea as it changes the ECGC to GCG. Great information, right? In our tea tasting sessions, I give instructions as to brewing tea and this is included in one of my points.
A 2006 study published in the September 13 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association concluded "Green tea consumption is associated with reduced mortality due to all causes and due to cardiovascular disease.........
In May 2006, researchers at Yale University School of Medicine wrote “green tea may prevent the oxidation of LDL cholesterol (the "bad" type), which, in turn, can reduce the buildup of plaque in arteries,”
4. Lose Weight
Our local Curves centre helps promote our tea. The owner has a fondness for a couple of our flavored green teas and states that she keeps cold green tea brewed from loose green tea in her water bottle finding it a great thirst quencher. Some sites indicate that green tea is a “fat buster” and helps increase our metabolism. I think that drinking green tea instead of a soda will dramatically reduce my calorie intake. Oprah has also promoted the results of drinking green tea as a weight loss benefit.
Dr. Nicholas Perricone, a self-proclaimed anti-aging specialist, appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show and told Oprah's viewers they can lose 10 lbs (4.5 kg) in 6 weeks drinking green tea instead of coffee.
A study published in the December 1999 American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that “Green tea has thermogenic properties and promotes fat oxidation beyond that explained by its caffeine content per se.”
5. Prevent and reduce severity of arthritis
Remember that unpronounceable word ECGC, it is back. Preliminary studies indicate that it may reduce inflammation of the joints. In some cases it also reduced joint damage which translates as great news for people suffering with this disease. The lack of fine motor mobility and the severe pain caused by this disease is really debilitating.
According to a Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine study published in the April 13 2005 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, antioxidants in green tea may prevent and reduce the severity of rheumatoid arthritis.
6. Be Happy
It isn’t winning the lottery that makes people happy, it is green tea. Well, both would be great but the studies are dealing with depression which is a disease not to be taken lightly. If green tea can help these people, what a wonderful bonus it would be. If you want to be happier, come to Vintage Petals Tea House with a friend and enjoy our relaxing atmosphere. Have a cup of green tea with one of our tasty desserts and see if you aren’t happier.
A more frequent consumption of green tea was associated with a lower prevalence of depressive symptoms in a Japanese study

7. Be Sharp
Free radicals – Does this sound like a great sale promotion? Oops, not even close. Reading a small amount about them gives my brain overload and I need to refill my tea cup. Talk about weak atom bonds, disruption of living cells, and damage increasing with age, frightens me enough to read more. The article stated that normally the body can handle free radicals but if antioxidants are unavailable damage can occur. Eating 5-8 servings of fruits and vegetables per day will ensure adequate intake of the antioxidants. New studies have also indicated the EGCG in green tea rescue damaged neurons in the brain.
How about a drink of Bohemian Raspberry Green Tea with a serving of fruit?
Vitamins E and C help play a part in protecting the body against the destructive effects of free radicals. My brother is taking vitamins that he says helps him to stay calm, but now I know better: it is to be smarter than me.
In a study performed at the Israel Institute of Technology, it was shown that the main antioxidant polyphenol of green tea extract, EGCG, when fed to mice induced with Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease, helped to protect brain cells from dying, as well as 'rescuing' already damaged neurons in the brain, a phenomenon called neurorescue or neurorestoration. The findings of the study, led by Dr. Silvia Mandell, were presented at the Fourth International Scientific Symposium on Tea and Human Health in Washington D.C., in 2007. Resulting tests underway in China, under the auspices of the Michael J. Fox Foundation, are being held on early Parkinson's patients.
